Insufficient Privacy Protection
iot06 • Rank #6 in OWASP 2023
Explanation
IoT devices collect extensive personal data including location, behavior patterns, biometric data, and environmental information. Insufficient privacy protection includes excessive data collection, missing consent mechanisms, unencrypted storage, and opaque data sharing practices. Privacy failures violate user trust and regulatory requirements.
Remedy
Implement privacy by design with data minimization. Obtain explicit consent before collecting personal data. Encrypt personal data at rest and in transit. Provide user controls for data access and deletion. Comply with applicable privacy regulations.
